Easily the best book I've read this year. It's a biography, a history of South Africa, a commentary on America, all rolled into one. Few writers can reach the level of honesty and richness which Eggers did with this dense memoir-cum-novel; together with Valentino Achak Deng, he has weaved a beautiful (hi)story of a proud and beautiful people who have, despite persistent efforts to erase them, shown us that it is possible to live and persist; to be proud of a story which does not deserve to be forgotten by them or anyone else.
